Chang'an (Xi'an)

Chang'an (today's Xi'an), translated as "eternal peace", was one of China's most important and immense ancient capitals. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), Chang An had become one of the world's great metropolises. At its heyday in the 8th century CE, the city was probably the most densely populated place on earth: nearly 3 million inhabitants (1 million within the imperial city walls and another 2 million in the surrounding suburbs). As the starting point of the Silk Road, Chang'an was a bridgehead for cultural and economic exchanges between China and foreign countries, and many foreign envoys and business people traveled to Chang'an every year.
